Chapter - 4
I’ll Prove It
Laura Freeze’s reaction was just as expected.
Her cold, axe-like eyes made me unconsciously swallow.
The murderous look on her face, as if she were about to crush my head, was terrifying.
‘The trigger’s been pulled.’ Well, of course, anyone who knew about her regression would hardly keep their composure. There was no way she wouldn’t try to strike.
“Who are you, exactly?”
Laura Freeze’s question was straightforward. I donned my mask and recited the pre-rehearsed script as if reading from a script.
“I am someone who possesses the ‘Prophet’s Eye’.”
“…Are you referring to ‘Future Sight’?”
“Yes, it’s similar to that.”
“Similar? Are you saying it’s different from Future Sight?”
“There are variations even within the same category.”
And in this world, there is only one person who truly possesses ‘Future Sight.’
Estelle Lurisia As long as that saintess exists, no one could claim to be a prophet. Even the regressor would know that fact.
“What’s the difference between you and a prophet?”
What’s the difference? There’s no such thing as a prophet. It’s all a carefully crafted lie I’ve made.
Who would need two abilities like Future Sight? But this absurd argument was necessary to capture the regressor’s attention and establish a cooperative relationship.
“A prophet is one who foresees the future.” I raised my hand and pointed toward the sky.
“And a prophet is one who corrects the future, guiding it onto the right path.”
“The right path?”
“The end of the world is an inevitable fate that cannot be changed.”
“...You really do have some sort of future vision, don’t you?”
Sorry, that was a lie. But I couldn’t help it. I kept telling lies.
“In the future I know, Laura Freeze doesn’t manage to save the world.”
“Are you asking me to believe that?”
It was a painful truth, but it was the truth.
The story couldn’t be cleared without the player’s help.
I silently waited for Laura Freeze’s reaction. I didn’t expect her to believe it immediately.
I’d keep lying, constantly, until the regressor’s suspicions were wiped away.
“Alright. Let’s make one thing clear first.”
Huh?
Suddenly, she spoke in a cold tone.
“Prove it.”
I had been so focused on lying that I’d forgotten. She was also a regressor. The ‘Egoist’ regressor who had been through countless insults.
“If you’re a prophet, you should be able to do it.”
Whoosh!
“You should be able to avoid your own ‘death.’”
She gathered a massive amount of magic power with her mace.
‘As expected, her personality is terrible.’
But what does it matter? Everything was going according to my plan.
“We don’t need unnecessary fights.”
“You’re not trying to back out now, are you?”
“I’m just saying there’s a better way to prove that I’m a prophet.”
“Stop spouting nonsense…”
“It’s an accomplishment you wouldn’t even dream of achieving.”
She crossed her arms, as if daring me to speak. Well, in that case, I’ll tell you.
“I’ll show you the impossible feat that only the regressor, Laura Freeze , can accomplish.”
“What did you say?”
“The impurity that’s interfering with the class.”
“You…?”
Oh, yeah, that’s right.
I drew a smirk at the corner of my mouth.
“I’ll handle that impurity.”
**********
It was an absurd boast.
An impurity that had interfered with the spacetime exploration class.
It was not a problem that could be solved with mediocre skills.
If he tried to handle it poorly, he would likely disappear without a trace.
The man named Yuto didn’t appear to be anything special at first glance.
A master whose abilities were hard to gauge? His magic power was faint and almost nonexistent.
‘Clearly just a show-off.’
Yet, the man named ‘Yuto’ was acting with complete nonchalance.
If this was wit to escape the immediate danger, he should have feared an uncertain future. But instead, he was sharpening his sword as if to show off.
‘He’s too shameless to just be a liar…’
It made me wonder if he had stopped thinking due to overwhelming fear. While I was lost in such thoughts, the time had finally come.
“Class C, this will conclude the spacetime exploration class. I believe everyone has grasped some clues to improve your combat instincts. Now, follow me and move to the portal…”
Instructor Julia’s command was abruptly cut off.
“Everyone, jump into the portal right now…”
“Huh?”
The cadet at the front tilted his head. The usual warmth from Instructor Julia was nowhere to be found. It meant that an impurity had interfered with her detection.
“J-Julia Instructor… I... I can’t move…”
It was no surprise. A mere cadet would be unable to withstand the pressure of that and would find it hard to even breathe.
“Damn it... How is it possible that such a monster is here in this low-level spacetime?”
Instructor Julia’s coarse words trembled faintly. She had realized that even she couldn’t handle this impurity.
‘If my power were still intact, I could have handled this…’
Laura Freeze felt regret, even though she knew better. Anger boiled up inside her at the despair she faced. But she had to face reality. She couldn’t let her emotions ruin everything in an instant.
‘Instructor Julia, I’m sorry, but you’ll have to be the one to sacrifice yourself.’
It was the only way out.
Anyway, Instructor Julia was doomed to die soon. She wasn’t someone who would be of great use to their future power. On the other hand, Laura Freeze had a responsibility to survive. Even if it was selfish, there was nothing to be done about it. After all, the probability of her saving the world was much higher.
Laura Freeze gave a bitter smile. Her cold, sharp, and ruthless gaze turned toward the man a few steps away.
‘His name was Yuto, right? By now, he’s probably already confronted this and succumbed to reality.’
But Yuto, the man, was looking at her with calm eyes. There was something about his indifferent gaze that sent a chill down Laura Freeze’s spine, though she couldn’t help but feel it.
‘What’s going on? Why is he…’
Unlike the others, there was no trace of fear in his face. It was more like he was waiting for prey, setting up a web to catch it.
‘Could it be... does he know I’m going to sacrifice Instructor Julia?’
If that was what he was waiting for, it was disappointing. She had clearly said it herself—she would handle the impurity.
‘It doesn’t matter. There’s no more time…’
Swish.
The Evil God was drawing near.
“Instructor Julia, I can break the cadets’ restraints and escape.”
With the power she currently possessed, breaking the restraints was possible. Of course, this plan relied on someone buying them that split second.
Instructor Julia, having made up her mind, exhaled a short breath and spoke.
“Alright… I’ll buy that time…”
“No, I’ll take that role,” Yuto interrupted.
Both Instructor Julia and Laura Freeze, along with everyone else in the room, turned to look at Yuto. Each of them shared the same feeling as they gazed at him.
“Yuto, if you’re worried about me, don’t. Protecting the cadets is the duty of the instructor.”
“No. I must stay behind for that duty.”
“What?”
“I’m not saying I’ll sacrifice myself. I’m saying I’ll hold out until reinforcements arrive.”
Yuto spoke without the slightest hint of hesitation.
“The fastest runner here is Instructor Julia. Go and request help. I’m betting on that chance.”
No one could argue. If that was the meaning behind it, there was no reason for him to stay behind. Still, none of them had the courage to face death, even with it looming right before them.
“Let’s go. If Yuto’s betting on that chance, hesitating would be rude.”
Laura Freeze chimed in. Her face was calm, but in her deep blue eyes, a trace of fierce resolve mixed in.
They all turned their backs on him and rushed toward the portal.
“Yuto! You must hold on! I’ll be there on time, no matter what!”
“I’m sorry, Yuto!”
“Thank you so much, Yuto! And I’m sorry!”
Instructor Julia and the cadets clenched their teeth and rushed forward, driven by Yuto’s sacrifice.
“……”
Laura Freeze stopped just before the portal. The silhouette of Yuto she had seen moments ago had long since vanished. The dark mass of the “Evil Serpent” that followed him had enveloped the area.
“What was that man…?”
Laura Freeze stared at the spot where he had been, then stepped into the portal.
**********
‘Has she gone?’
She has.
The presence that had lingered in front of the portal until the very end disappeared. With that, the only ones left in this low-level spacetime were the Evil Serpent and me.
‘Sss…’
The Evil Serpent was overflowing with confidence. It was far beyond the level of a regular monster. It was a disaster that couldn’t be tackled in the early stages. No wonder the regressor would try to escape. But I had something to rely on. I hadn’t spared any effort for him.
“Evil Serpent, please wait for a moment. We’re in the middle of something fun.”
‘Sss?’
The serpent’s calmness shifted into curiosity.
It must be curious.
A mere human, losing all sense of fear, was now acting recklessly in front of it.
“This just doesn’t end…”
I blankly stared at the countless messages that kept appearing before me.
